TYPES OF DONATION:
Bone marrow donation can be done in two ways, by puncture or apheresis.
The decision on which method to use is made exclusively by the attending physicians.
PUNCTURE: A procedure performed under anesthesia in which bone marrow is removed from the inside of the pelvic bone by means of punctures.
It requires a 24-hour hospital stay and pain may occur at the puncture site in the first few days, which can be alleviated with the use of painkillers.
Recovery time is around 15 days.
AFFERESIS: A method in which the donor takes medication for five days in order to increase the production of circulating stem cells in their blood.
During the use of this substance, bone and muscle pain may occur, as well as a headache. After this period, the donation is carried out using an apheresis machine, which collects the blood through two of the donor's veins, one in each arm, or a deep vein, separating the stem cells and returning the blood components that are not needed by the patient. There is no need for hospitalization or anesthesia. Nausea, numbness, a cold sensation and bruising at the access site may occur.
